A man walks into … 9Cento

He sits down beside us, studies the menu, and orders his food.

When his half bottle of wine arrives, he samples it like a pro.

Later, he motions toward me as if he wishes to borrow our salt.

Turns out, he wants me to finish the sip of wine in my glass.

When he pours me a taste from his bottle, I follow his ritual.

Grazie, I say, extending a precious bit for Rebecca to taste.

Upon closer inspection, I confirm my appreciation for Barolo.

As lunch unwinds, the gentleman holds the bottle to the light.

Enough wine is left for him to extend his generosity again.

As the man pays and turns to leave, Buona giornata I say.

Where S. Gregorio Minore stood
Where the Germans came on board
Where j.t. stood to get the pic of the ruins

The way the Anfiteatro looked
The way my notes look
The way the Monastero del Palazzo looked

When old meets new
When a doorbell tolls for thee
When iPhone finds a chink in the armor

More steps
More notes
More photo ops

Two tourists, map securely in hand, walk up to a sign
Where two veterans, map at home, are found to stand.

Numero 8 marks the spot

The joke was on both of us, as we easily explained,
Since the German explorers spoke English just fine.

Because of the ongoing work, the monumental complex is not visitable.

Past the barriers and the universal symbol to stop,
Down alleyways and around corners (where they bend

Beyond view), we come upon the historical landmark
(A sign from a time still now recorded on town maps).

For over a week now we have been checking to see
If we’ll ever get a taste of Paté di Pomodori Secchi.

Produced only by Delizie Umbre, so far as we know,
A jar of the treat waits for the unobservant to show.

Our joking phrase speaks to a common occurrence:
The sympathetic affection of one mind for another.

As when a giggle of school girls pass us by en masse,
We both know the very same words make us laugh.

While we relaxed at La Portella, without ever dancing I might add, the plan was hatched to marshal the troops for an assault on the Anfiteatro Romano.

Different recollections ensued, as that is want to happen more and more as we age. Yet closer at hand, both agreed we would take the road usually not taken.
